Courageous seed planting
Who was the person who first told you about Jesus? Perhaps it was a parent, a family member, a Sunday School teacher or maybe an acquaintance?
For me it was a friend in high school. I remember the moment so clearly. We were sitting in the choir room eating our lunch. I had asked her a question. To be honest, I don’t remember the specifics of the question but I remember her answer.
She said, “I believe that God became one of us.”
I must have looked perplexed because she said quickly, “Let me back up…” and then she began to explain.
“God created us to be with Him, but our sin — and everyone sins,” she said, “separate us from God. The thing is that our sins can’t be removed by doing good things. SOOOO… Jesus paid the ultimate price for our sin. Jesus died, and because he died, our sins were paid for entirely. BUT, it doesn’t end there,” she said with great excitement. “Jesus rose from the dead because Jesus was who he claimed to be, God in the flesh.”
Boom…mind blown.
Well, not actually.
I remember how nervous she looked as she was telling me all this. She kept checking my face to make sure I was with her. I, on the other hand, was cognizant of not rolling my eyes as she spoke. I listened, thinking all the while that my friend was rather looney for what she believed. I smiled politely and added her to the list of people that I didn’t really need to hang out with.
Unfortunately, we didn’t spend that much time together after that encounter, but as I look back I realize that my friend planted a seed. It was a seed that didn’t take root until many years later, but eventually it did because that young girl was brave enough to share something she knew was good news.
If you were here on Sunday you were blessed to hear Mike Gordon speak on 2 Kings 5 and the young servant girl who had the audacity to inform her master, Naaman, of someone who would change his life.
My courageous high school friend, changed my life, and I am forever grateful.
Who is that person for you?
Who would say you are that person for them?
