Be. Still.
It's often hard in the middle of a difficult situation to know the right thing to do to make the situation right. So often we rush to fix the situation only to make it worse.
I recently had coffee with someone who was going through a very difficult time both at work and personally. He laid out the circumstances that led him into the position he found himself in, and with a very heavy heart looked at me and asked, "What do I do?"
"I am a doer," he continued. "I need to fix this and I just don't know what to do. Should I do __________? Should I do ________? I just don't know."
He paused, quite obviously waiting for me to give an answer.
All I could do was look him and say, "I wish I had the answer for you, but I don't."
We talked for some time more but it wasn't until I got in my car to head back to the church that the words came to me. Be Still. He needed to be still.
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Be still and focus on God.
Be still and listen.
The words to this faithful man, desperate to make things right but not sure what to do or how to do it, should have been “Be Still”.
As I turned into the parking lot of the church a new song by Hillary Scott called “Still” played on the Christian radio station.
She sang:
I believe that You were God alone
But sometimes I still try to take control
'Cause I get scared when I can't see the end
And all You want from me is to let go
You're parting waters
Making a rain for me
You're moving mountains that I don't even see
You've answered my prayer before I even speak
All You need for me to be is still
I bring my praise before I bring my need
'Cause there's no fear You've not already seen
I rest my heart on all Your promises
'Cause I have seen and know Your faithfulness
You're parting waters
Making a rain for me
You're moving mountains that I don't even see
You've answered my prayer before I even speak
All You need for me to be is still
And know that You are God
Be still
And know that You, trust that You are parting waters
Lord, You whispered my name
Oh, You answered my prayer
You're moving mountains
You're parting waters
Making a rain for me
You're moving mountains that I don't even see
You've answered my prayer before I even speak
All You need for me to be is still
Be still

When I got into the church I made a call. "Be still," I said to him. "Be still and listen.”
