The guarantee
When I was in grade 2, Mickey Feor had a crush on me. I knew that because my friend Melanie told me.
Mickey asked Melanie if I liked him. She wasn’t sure so he decided to compose a little note. He gave the note to Melanie to give to me.
The note read,
Dear Mona,
If I asked you to go with me would you? Check the box.
And as you can probably imagine there were two boxes. Under one box was the word “YES” and under the other the word “NO”.
Melanie giggled as she handed me the note. Her excitement was bubbling over. She was all too happy to be in the middle of this monumental event. The two of us hunched over the note, and chortled like only 7 year old girls can.
Mickey wanted a guarantee. Before receiving a possible rejection he tested the waters through my friend, when that proved unsatisfactory, he administered a questionnaire.
We are all a bit like Mickey, aren’t we? If we are going to put ourselves out there, don’t want want to make sure it is going to work out?
The reality in life is that there are no guarantees. Even the advertisements that claim “money back guarantee” have their hiccups.
I remember opening up the note, reading it and then sending it back to Mickey with a new box that I checked that said “MAYBE”. In hindsight that was not very nice.
But in love and in life there are no guarantees, except maybe this…GOD. Look at what scripture reminds us:
And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires. — 2 Peter 1:4 (NLT)
For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. — Jeremiah 29:11 (NLT)
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. — Matthew 11:28-29 (NLT)
No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. — Romans 8:37-39 (NLT)
“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” — John 14:27 (NLT)
