Love is dangerous!
Many, many years ago I had the opportunity to attend a Missions conference in Urbana, Illinois. It was at this conference that I heard two amazing, life transforming speakers - Billy Graham and Tony Campolo. As a new Christian, I had no idea that in that one weekend I had hit the preaching jackpot.
Dr. Campolo preached a message of commitment that stirred my soul. I still remember him saying to the crowd of over 20,000, “What the church needs today are Christians who are radically committed to the Biblical Jesus.” He went on to say that, “If you become this person - it’ll be dangerous. You will be dangerous.”
Dangerous because if we really commit ourselves to living the kind of life that Jesus calls us to, then our lives will be different. We will think differently, we will act differently, we will spend differently, and we will love differently. All of that can be dangerous!
For instance, we know that love is evident and tangible; it’s not just a spiritual thing that can’t be seen or touched. Love is a decision we make―a decision to treat people the way Jesus would treat them. So if we decide to radically commit ourselves to loving as Jesus loved, I guarantee that it won’t be easy and it certainly won’t be without personal sacrifice. Each time we choose to love someone, it will cost us something―time, money or effort. It’ll be “dangerous”! But here’s the thing: Love changes everything!
I am so excited that on Sunday May 6th, THIS SUNDAY, Dr. Tony Campolo will be at Amberlea. He will be preaching a message entitled Love Changes Everything, and I promise you that you need to hear this man in person!
In case you didn’t know:
Dr. Campolo is an American sociologist, pastor, author, public speaker and former spiritual advisor to U.S. President Bill Clinton.
Dr. Campolo is known as one of the most influential Christian leaders of his generation and has been a major proponent of progressive thought and reform within the evangelical community. He has authored 35 books and has been a guest on programs such as The Colbert Report, The Charlie Rose Show, Larry King Live, Nightline, Crossfire, Politically Incorrect, and The Hour. Dr. Campolo now spends much of his time working alongside World Vision.
